For the transformation of the food system to be just and sustainable for all, it needs to include the voices of those with living experience of food poverty and insecurity.  Funding was provided to create a good practice toolkit for research which will examine strategies for co-development and co-production that are inclusive of those communities that are often overlooked in net zero forums.

Key findings

  • That although there is a growing trend for research to engage with the voices of those with lived and living experience, there is a need for more in-depth engagement and understanding of the nuances and dynamics of engagement with voices that are often unheard.
  • That research dynamics can embrace what I call ‘radical positionality’ wherein the researcher and the researched offer continuing reflexivity that doesn’t shy away from biases within social and educational structures.
  • There is the need for a new research model that is informed by lived and living experience to engage ethically, in a non-exploitative way and thus offer a radical vehicle for change.

Key findings

  • This is a work in progress. The three elements: Remuneration, Ownership and Community guidance offered here constitute key recommendations for best practice.
