Emergent Generation
Awarded: £5,000
Bringing together a diverse range of young people aged 18 to 35 (the Emergent Generation) from across the food system to attend a one-day net-zero workshop. Beginnining by setting the scene, summarising the latest research, policies and practice relating to net zero in the UK agri-food sector, participants will then explore their challenges, opportunities and lessons learnt from their current roles and each other.
Key findings
Three key themes emerged from the day:
- From farm to fork – climate impact is now being experienced by us all
- Net zero should be an outcome, not the guiding star.
- We have to work within the system, but get wise about power imbalances.
Recommendations for further research and activity
- Workshop, networking and facilitated spaces are vital sustenance – bringing diverse audiences together to connect, listen and share knowledge is crucial .
- Support young people to work out what action is effective, and their particular roles to play – turn passion into action.
- Better understand the commercial realities – without food retail leadership and consumer support the net zero targets will not be met.
Net Zero – Roadmap and Em Gen Reflections
Sophie García Halliday attended the event and wrote the following reflection,
Making sense of Net Zero with good food and good company
"Given Emergent Generation’s current focus on 'reconnecting urban and rural', it felt appropriate to be meeting in Bermondsey," writes Kezia Kershaw in her blog about the day.
