Eating Better

Awarded: £5,000

Three events to facilitate the conversation on what a net zero world looks like for both farmers in the UK and the retail sector, whilst ensuring a just transition.

Key findings

  • Splitting the producer event over two days allows participants the headspace and time to explore topics in detail, and allow time for genuine connection. This then allows for constructive dialogue that has meaning, as opposed to rushed conversations.

  • More time should be spent getting organisations to work more effectively together, and relationships need investment. The retail event allowed us to invest in relationships between NGOs and those with real-world retail management experience.
  • Taking people out of their comfort zone and into new environments, such as onto a farm, is a fresh and unique way to tackle a problem or provide space for discussion. This was a big learning for the Eating Better team and something we are going to aim to do more of.

Recommendations for further research and activity

  • Language and dialogue has a key role to play in the success of changing food systems, and more effort should be spent on getting the framing right around less and better
