The future of livestock farming, where do animal welfare and future farming systems interact.
I am an academic that has been studying the behaviour and welfare of farmed animals, the assessment of welfare and the attitudes and behaviours of farmers towards livestock. Increasingly, questions have arisen regarding how sustainable better welfare systems are and whether we can have both nature friendly farming, high welfare for our farm animals and lower environmental footprints. This is where my recent research is focused.

I am a chemist with interests in food protein chemistry, particularly the recovery of proteins (and other high value ingredients) from agri-food co-product streams and biorefining in general. I also have interests in using fermentation to produce high value chemicals (particularly biosurfactants) and production of polysaccharide producing bacteria for soil bioaugmentation. A further interest is functionality of alternative proteins as meat/dairy protein replacers in formulated foods.

I have >20 years academic and industrial research experience in environmental analytical chemistry. I am an agronomy and physiology researcher at NIAB focusing on potato growth and production and have expertise in running potato field trials both on our trial grounds in Cambridge and on-farm. I often work closely with CUPGRA who are a group of potato growers, agronomists and industry members keen to "grow potatoes better by understanding how potatoes grow" and currently lead the long-term CUPGRA Reference Crop experiment which presently focuses on nitrogen uptake from conventional and novel N sources.
