Local to county to bioregional relocalisation and food strategy/policy, from community grassroots to town & Parish to county council-levels; food partnerships; civil food resilience mapping and planning.

About me

I have a background as a food policy researcher, educator, environmental scientist and market gardener. I currently work as a director/coordinator of the Shropshire Good Food Partnership and founder/lead of Food Forward Bishop’s Castle. I hold a PhD in Food Policy from City University’s (now City St. George’s University, London) Centre for Food Policy, where my research focused on sustainable food production and local level food policy and the organisational structures of food partnerships. With the Shropshire Good Food Partnership (SGFP), I have worked from community to county and bioregional levels of food systems, network building and public engagement for food transitions. I contribute to the governance and strategic direction of the organisation, as well as the comms, lead on policy work and more. SGFP is becoming known for the annual Marches Real Food and Farming events, and the Shropshire Good Food Trail. Through the Partnership, we're engaging with the wider Marches area through working with other food partnerships to form the Marches Real Food and Farming Network. My interests are largely in relocalisation and resilience across our local/regional/bioregional food systems, sustainability, food security as a civil defence mechanism, and the integration of local level food strategies at the town and parish council level – all this with the aim of connecting the food system dots in a sustainable way for wider regional and national level systems resilience.

Research on greenhouse gas emissions / sequestration on farms and managed environments; soil chemistry and health.

About me

I\'m a geochemist and soil scientist. I look at element cycling from soils, across agricultural systems, to the river-ocean system, and relate this to greenhouse gas balance, nutrient availability and soil health. More broadly, I’m interested in examining questions about interconnections of biogeochemical cycling and climate change through Earth history, and how these might evolve in the future under human influence.

I would like to work with other members on exploring sustainable and sustainable methods of fertilisation, particularly through the use of vermicompost and vermicompost tea. Vermicomposting harnesses the natural decomposition process, enriching soil with microbe-dense, organic matter while minimizing waste. By collaborating with others, I aim to share the benefits of vermicompost, which boosts soil health, supports plant growth, and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. In addition, I’m excited about the potential for brewing and fermentation processes in fertiliser production. These techniques can create bio-fertilisers that improve soil microbiology and plant nutrition. By combining the principles of vermiculture and fermentation, i believe there is potential to create innovative, sustainable fertilizers that contribute to healthier ecosystems. Through collaboration, I would like to foster discussions, research, and experiments on how to integrate these natural processes into larger-scale agricultural or home-gardening systems.

About me

I'm an Early Career Researcher currently completing a thesis on the impact of Vermicompost Tea on Cover Crops. I come from a 'non traditional' background as someone who is changing career after 10+ years of experience as a communications consultant in the architecture industry.
