Quantifying and modifying crop GHG flux, improving crop climate resilience and crop productivity

About me

I am a broadly trained plant physiologist investigating how plants respond to changing environmental conditions at both leaf and enzyme levels, focusing on photosynthesis and its role in improving crop performance. I aim to understand how plants adapt to stresses like elevated carbon dioxide levels, temperature fluctuations, and drought. By studying photosynthetic responses in model, crop, and ecologically significant species, I seek to uncover natural mechanisms that help plants endure environmental extremes. My research translates this understanding into strategies to optimize photosynthesis and enhance crop resilience, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices in a rapidly changing climate, and focussed on both arable and protected crops.

Incorporating aquatic food production into agri-food systems transformation approaches

About me

I am a principal marine ecologist and science topic lead for 'aquatic food systems' and for 'coastal ecology' at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science. I am an honorary associate professor at the University of East Anglia, science lead for 'biodiversity and ecosystems' at the Cefas-UEA Collaborative Centre for Sustainable Use of the Seas and a member of the Norwich Institute for Sustainable Development. Taking a systems approach, I conduct applied research and provide policy advice on sustainability in aquatic food systems and on the effects of broader human activities on marine ecosystems. I work with colleagues from natural, social, political and health/medical sciences and humanities across governments, universities, industry and global organisations. I am the co-lead of the One Food initiative (https://onefoodcommunity.org/).

I've directed and managed studies for UK, EU and international organisations covering issues not only from ‘farm to fork’, but from ‘lab to fork’, particularly the role of science and technology in transforming the food chain. I'm a trustee of the Food Ethics Council. I was formerly Director of the Innovation, Health and Science Group at RAND Europe; prior to that I led the food chain policy team within the Climate, Environment and Food practice at ICF International.
